Dillingham with their children while they are in treatment. Their children will be
cared for during the day and in evenings when they are at Jake’s or
participating in after care. This is an ongoing weekly support group.
SISTR will pay transportation costs for women and her
children to come to the shelter and for the costs of travel back and forth to Jake'
s, AA meetings, support groups, etc. SAFE also offers free child care five
nights a week from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for children whose caregiver is

Men's Program
SAFE staff co-facilitates the Men's Program, a batterer's intervention program operated by the
BBAHC Counseling Center. The Men's program is approved for meeting minimum state
standards by the Alaska Council on Domestic Vioelnce and Sexual Assault and accepts men
who are referred by the court as well as those who volunteer for the program. SAFE also
provides victim safety monitoring for the partners of men enrolled in the program.
SART Team (Sexual Assault Response Team)
The team consists of a SAFE advocate, law enforcement officer, and Sexual Assault
Nurse Examiners (SANE). If a case involves a child under age of 16, social workers from
the Child Advocacy Center and the Office of Children's Services may also be part of the
initial response team.
The Team's responsibility is to provide a coordinated response to sexual assault victims when a
report has been made to a law enforcement agent. The agent begins an investigation and
may ask the victim if they will consent to a medical-legal--also known as a forensic--exam for
evidence collection. If they do, the SANE will conduct the exam in the SART room at
Kanakanak Hospital. If the victim does not consent to the medical-legal exam, they can still
have a medical exam and advocacy services. An Advocate is always contacted and responds
when the SART is activated, even when the victim does not consent to the forensic exam
and/or chooses not to report to law enforcement. However, in every case, the victim chooses
whether and in what form they want advocacy services.

Some victims
break free of
abuse but never
break into loving
themselves.
The notion of
loving yourself
may sound
self-centered or
selfish, but it isn't!
Loving yourself
is a part of
well-being.
Well-being is a
life-long
journey with big rewards.
Thriving is
beyond surviving.
It is living fully
and gives you
balance through
life's ups and
downs;
celebrations and
devastations.
